The one you'll remember
Double par 5 on the 2nd and 3rd holes, both quite reachable, and this can set the tone for the round. For the 2nd, make sure to aim close to the OB fence on the left, it will roll right, and the 3rd is a blind tee, be very careful of the OB line on the left, its much closer than you think.
What you need to know
- Just call for bookings, don't bother trying to find online links.
- The course plays quite short, make sure to convert those par 5's.
- The wind isn't as bad as near the coast, but the course isn't protected and you can be quite exposed.
A working wine farm hosting an 18-hole championship layout in the Bottelary Valley, five minutes outside Stellenbosch. Ken Elkin's original 1960 design has been quietly refreshed over the last few seasons. The course opens benignly, tightens through the testing par-4 7th (men's SI 1), and signs off with the long par-3 16th late on the back nine. Bent-grass greens, kikuyu fairways, and a clubhouse that doubles as the wine farm tasting room.
Course at a glance
Strategy
Make sure you think about your drives on the par 5's, its not so critical to be long, but be straight. You should still be able to reach these in 2, don't try and smash your drive, you don't need it. On the par 4s clubbing down off the tee might be worth it. On most of them you don't need to hit a driver, and there are even a couple where you will run out of fairway. As you drive to the course, you will see the hill towards Stellenbosch right in front of you, keep this hill in mind when reading the greens, you will find that most of the greens slope away from the hill.
When to play
Like most Cape Town courses, early morning is the way to go with less wind and less heat in the summer. But here you can also play in the afternoons, there is enough trees to hide from the heat in the summer. The wind will catch you, but being closer to Stellenbosch that cape Town, you will survive the wind.
After the round
The clubhouse isn't enormous, but its stick around and have a few drinks with the friendly locals. You are in wine territory here you can also decide to leave the club house and go to any of the wine farms nearby. You might even want to stay on the farm itself and try their wine collection. During the winter, I can definitely recommend the fireplace upstairs.
Getting there
Driving from Cape Town, I normally just take the R304 to Stellbosch and the short Bottelary Rd trip. Technically the R300 to Bottelary Rd might be shorter, but its just more of a hassle.

Editor's review
Devonvale: the thinking golfer's everyday course
Devonvale isn't the longest course you'll play in the Cape, but the layout makes you think on almost every tee. The par 5s are reachable and built to score on, the par 4s constantly tempt you to grab a driver when something else would be smarter, and there's enough water to punish bad club choices. Not a top 10 course — but exactly the kind of layout you'd want as a member.
