Albertinia
A rural 9-hole course in the aloe-farming town of Albertinia, roughly halfway between Swellendam and Mossel Bay on the N2. Flat, short, and almost always empty — a relaxed hour-and-a-half round for passing travellers. The clubhouse doubles as a good pit-stop for a coffee.

Arabella Country Estate
Kleinmond
A Peter Matkovich championship course on the banks of the Bot River lagoon, with the Kogelberg mountains as a backdrop and water in play on the back nine. Consistently ranked in SA's top 10 and a regular host of professional events. Pair it with a night at the Southern Sun lodge on-site.

Atlantic Beach Golf Club
Melkbosstrand, Cape Town
A modern links-style course cut through coastal fynbos north of the city, with views across to Robben Island and Table Mountain. Bring a ball you don't mind losing — the rough is thick and the wind is serious. A favourite with corporate days thanks to the clubhouse sitting right on the ocean.

Beaufort West Golf Club
Beaufort West
A 9-hole Karoo course outside Beaufort West, the N1 halfway-stop between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Flat, dry, and often windy, with grass greens that stay surprisingly playable through the summer heat. A welcome stretch-of-the-legs for golfers breaking up the long drive north.

Bellville Golf Club
Bellville, Cape Town
A hilly, character-full course in the Tygerberg basin with some of the fastest greens in the region. The slopes mean you're rarely standing flat-footed — read every lie. Solid conditioning year-round thanks to reliable water supply, and one of the best-value premium rounds in the northern suburbs.

Caledon Golf Club
Caledon
A modest country course on the hills above the Overberg town of Caledon. Short, walkable, and almost always empty on weekdays. A reliable stop-off en route between Cape Town and the Garden Route, usually paired with a stay at the Caledon Hotel and Casino.

Ceres Golf Club
Ceres
A high-altitude course in the Witzenberg mountains, ringed by the orchards that Ceres is famous for. Noticeably cooler than the rest of the Cape in summer and downright cold in winter. A strong local membership and well-kept greens make it worth the hour-and-a-half drive.

Clovelly Golf Course
Clovelly, Cape Town
A quiet valley course tucked between the mountains of Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek. Known for its birdlife, friendly members, and the railway line that runs along the holes nearest the bay. Walkable year-round, and shielded from the worst of the summer southeaster.

De Zalze Golf Club
Stellenbosch
A Peter Matkovich design winding through the De Zalze wine estate south of Stellenbosch, with water in play on ten holes and the Helderberg hanging over the back nine. Lodge accommodation and the Terroir restaurant on-site make it a common weekend-away destination. Fair off the tee, punishing if you miss the wrong side.

Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate
Koelenhof, Stellenbosch
A working wine farm hosting an 18-hole championship layout in the Bottelary Valley, five minutes outside Stellenbosch. Ken Elkin's original 1960 design has been quietly refreshed over the last few seasons. The course opens benignly, tightens through the testing par-4 7th (men's SI 1), and signs off with the long par-3 16th late on the back nine. Bent-grass greens, kikuyu fairways, and a clubhouse that doubles as the wine farm tasting room.

Durbanville Golf Club
Durbanville, Cape Town
Arguably the strongest members' course in the northern suburbs. Rolling terrain, generous doglegs, and a clubhouse that treats golfers as guests rather than traffic. Regularly hosts provincial events and draws a strong weekend field — book ahead.

Erinvale Golf Club
Somerset West
A Gary Player signature design built into the slopes of the Helderberg, with ten holes on the mountain and eight on the flatter plain below. Hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf. The elevation changes and tight lies on the back nine make it one of the more demanding estate courses in the Cape.

Fancourt Links
Fancourt Estate, George
Gary Player's links-style masterpiece, carved out of what was previously flat farmland and built up into a proper seaside-style course a few kilometres from the coast. Hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup. Regularly ranked #1 in South Africa. Tee times are by resort guest / member arrangement.

Fancourt Montagu
Fancourt Estate, George
The resort's parkland headline act before the Links was built — still top 10 in SA and a former SA Open venue. Immaculate conditioning, mature trees, and the Outeniqua mountains as a backdrop on almost every hole. Usually plays a shot or two easier than the Links.

Fancourt Outeniqua
Fancourt Estate, George
The most forgiving of the three Fancourt courses — wider fairways, less trouble off the tee, and generally warmer reception to double-digit handicaps. A Gary Player redesign that still carries the resort's conditioning standards. The right pick for a first-timer at Fancourt.

George Golf Club
George
Founded in 1886 and one of the oldest clubs in the country. A classic parkland layout with towering pines, generous fairways, and the Outeniqua mountains framing the back nine. Consistently in excellent condition and a stalwart of Garden Route golf trips.

Goose Valley Golf Club
Plettenberg Bay
A Gary Player design in the Keurbooms River estuary on the edge of Plett. Water is in play on eleven holes and the fairways share the property with a healthy population of grey mongoose and bushbuck. Short enough to be walkable, testing enough to stay interesting.

Hermanus Golf Club
Hermanus
A well-regarded parkland course on the Hermanus hillside, with glimpses of Walker Bay and whales in season. Tree-lined fairways, small greens, and a consistent southeaster keep scores honest. Combines nicely with a Hermanus weekend — golf in the morning, wine and whales in the afternoon.

King David Mowbray Golf Club
Mowbray, Cape Town
Established in 1910 and sitting right off the N2, this is the go-to course for quick rounds on either side of a working day. Flat, well-maintained parkland with the Liesbeek River running through it and Devil's Peak overhead. Strong junior golf programme and regularly priced below its actual quality.

Kingswood Golf Estate
George
A Sally Little / Danie Obermeyer design on the George plains, with wide fairways, strategic bunkering, and views of the surrounding mountains. Less celebrated than neighbouring Fancourt but regularly in top condition and priced considerably more accessibly. A solid second round on a George trip.

Kleinmond Golf Club
Kleinmond
A friendly 9-hole course in the seaside village of Kleinmond, separate from the Arabella estate up the road. Rolling coastal fairways, fynbos-lined roughs, and views across the Bot River lagoon. Exactly the unpretentious weekend-away round the Overberg is known for.

Knysna Golf Club

Metropolitan Golf Club
Mouille Point, Cape Town
The only course inside the Cape Town city bowl, a few minutes from the V&A Waterfront. A compact, accessible layout with the stadium on one side and the Atlantic on the other — drive over Table Mountain on a clear afternoon and you'll see why it's a favourite of business visitors. Pace-of-play friendly.

Milnerton Golf Club
Milnerton, Cape Town
A genuine links course on the Atlantic coast, with Table Mountain sitting across the bay on every tee box. The wind is the defining feature — a calm day is rare and unremarkable; an average day will pull half your shots sideways. Tough, honest golf with one of the best views in the country.

Montagu Golf Club
Montagu
A short 9-hole course in the Route 62 town of Montagu, ringed by the red cliffs the town is known for. Quick to play and perfect as part of a weekend-away itinerary. The views from the back nine make up for the occasional rough patch on the fairways.

Mossel Bay Golf Club
Mossel Bay
A well-maintained coastal course on the Mossel Bay peninsula, with sea views from multiple holes and a steady breeze off the Indian Ocean. The layout is classic parkland on the front, more exposed and windy on the back nine. A dependable Garden Route round that rarely disappoints.

Oubaai Golf Resort
Herolds Bay, George
Ernie Els's first signature design in South Africa, opened in 2006 and perched on the cliffs above Herolds Bay. Spectacular ocean views on at least eight holes and a constant breeze. The conditioning and service match the setting — it's one of the standout Garden Route rounds.

Oudtshoorn Golf Club
Oudtshoorn
A Little Karoo course on the outskirts of the ostrich-farming town of Oudtshoorn, surrounded by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. Firm, fast fairways in summer and a dry heat that rewards a tight ball-flight. Often played as part of a Route 62 / Cango Caves trip.

Paarl Golf Club
Boschenmeer Estate, Paarl
A 27-hole complex redesigned by David Frost and Danie Obermeyer, set on the Paarl floodplain with the Berg River running through the property. Pearl Valley Golf Course
Val de Vie Estate, Paarl
A Jack Nicklaus signature course opened in 2003 and consistently ranked in SA's top 10. Set inside Val de Vie Estate with the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains framing every hole. Immaculate conditioning, wide fairways, and some of the most demanding par 3s in the country.

Pezula Championship Course
Eastern Head, Knysna
A Ronald Fream / David Dale design perched on the Eastern Head above Knysna lagoon. Dramatic elevation changes, cliff-top holes, and a ferocious wind make it one of the more memorable — and demanding — tests in the country. Part of the Pezula resort, with accommodation on-site.

Pinnacle Point Golf Estate
Mossel Bay
A Peter Matkovich cliff-top design with seven holes running along the edge of the Indian Ocean. Spectacular photo opportunities, punishing wind, and balls lost to the cliffs in equal measure. Most memorable round on the Garden Route — bring extra balls and a wide-angle lens.

Plettenberg Bay Country Club
Plettenberg Bay
The town's established members' club, sitting on the hillside above Plett with ocean views on the back nine. Mature coastal vegetation, small greens, and a welcoming clubhouse. Busy in summer with visiting tourists — book ahead over December and Easter.

Robertson Golf Club
Robertson
A country club set among the vineyards of Route 62, with the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountains in the distance. The fairways are wide, the greens honest, and the pace of play relaxed. A popular stop for cycling-and-golf weekenders out of Cape Town.

Rondebosch Golf Club
Rondebosch East, Cape Town
A short, flat parkland course off Klipfontein Road, noted for its mature oaks and milkwoods lining almost every fairway. Accuracy beats power here — most holes reward the player who can keep the ball in play. A favourite of UCT students and the city's weekday retiree crowd.

Royal Cape Golf Club
Wynberg, Cape Town
Founded in 1885, Royal Cape is the oldest golf club in South Africa and one of the oldest outside the British Isles. A flat, traditional parkland layout with firm greens and Table Mountain framing the back nine. Has hosted multiple South African Opens and still plays like a proper championship test.

Simola Golf Club

Simon's Town Country Club
Simon's Town, Cape Town
A scenic 9-hole course on the slopes above Simon's Town harbour, with False Bay views from almost every tee. Short, quirky, and windy — a quick morning round before heading to the penguins. Welcoming to visitors and still one of the best-value rounds in the Peninsula.

Swellendam Golf Club
Swellendam
A friendly country club at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, in the third-oldest town in South Africa. Flat and walkable with wide fairways, good for improving golfers or anyone passing through on the N2. The mountain backdrop makes for a memorable round, even when the swing isn't cooperating.

Vredenburg Golf Club
Vredenburg
A relaxed 9-hole country course in the West Coast service town of Vredenburg, halfway between Saldanha and Paternoster. Flat, windswept fairways and firm greens typical of the Cape's west coast — a straightforward, affordable round to pair with a weekend on the Saldanha peninsula.

Wellington Golf Club

Westlake Golf Club
Lakeside, Cape Town
