There are few places on earth where you can finish a round under the Simonsberg, drive ten minutes, and sit down to a world-class tasting. The Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl — combine championship layouts, dramatic mountain backdrops, and some of the best food and wine in the country. This guide works for locals planning a weekend and for visitors extending a Cape Town trip.
The signature courses
Pearl Valley Golf Course
A Jack Nicklaus signature set inside Val de Vie, and the flagship Winelands round for many visitors. Bentgrass greens, generous fairways, and postcard mountain views at almost every turn. Expect resort-level conditioning and service.
De Zalze Golf Club
A parkland layout woven around the Kleine Zalze wine estate just outside Stellenbosch. Water in play on a handful of holes, plenty of shape off the tee, and a clubhouse finish that very easily turns into lunch.
Stellenbosch Golf Club
One of the oldest clubs in South Africa, and a more traditional, members-style experience than the resort courses. The layout rewards positional play, and the views back toward Stellenbosch are quietly world-class.
Pair your round with a tasting
After Pearl Valley, the short drive into Franschhoek village is mandatory — stop at one of the Main Road estates or stay on for dinner. After De Zalze or Stellenbosch GC, you're minutes from Kleine Zalze, Spier, or the Jonkershoek valley cellars. Build the day around the golf and let the tasting come to you.
When to play
October through April is the sweet spot, though the Winelands can be genuinely hot at midsummer peaks — morning tee times are ideal. The transitional months of March, April, and October combine comfortable golf conditions with harvest and post-harvest tastings at many estates.
A two-day weekend plan

- Saturday evening: Stay in Stellenbosch village or a wine estate guesthouse.
- Sunday morning: Drive to Pearl Valley in Franschhoek.
- Sunday afternoon: Long lunch in Franschhoek village before the drive back.
